The theory of translation variation is a new field in translation strategy research.Opposed to the complete translation, translation variation contains selectivetranslation, edited translation, translation and report, summarized translation,translation and comment, translation and report, adaption translation, translation andwriting, reference and translation, and imitation and translation. Selective translationis one of the methods of translation variation strategy “reduce”.Selective translation is a combination of selection and translation. It is atranslation variation strategy, which translates the main information or the partialinformation the reader needs that selected by the specific requirements. Thetranslation method accelerates the spread of information, improves the efficiency oftranslation and meets the readers’ needs. Based on the principles of selectivetranslation, the flexible use of selective translation strategy can achieve the expectedtranslation effect.However, the researches about selective translation are not rich. Under theguidance of translation variation theory, the thesis researched the selective translationfrom its definition, processes, units, methodologies, principles and functions byanalyzing abundant examples. It aimed to establish the selective translationmethodology, give readers a better understanding about selective translation, andprovide a methodology guidance for translation practice.
