As the first step of interpretation, listening and information receiving determineswhether an interpreter could successfully grasp the source language and fulfill thework. Being an important part of interpretation it’s also the weak link of manyinterpreters. Especially for the majority of students it’s the bottleneck problem thatneeds to be addressed urgently. In practice, during the interpreting, some factors mayhave bad effects on listening and information receiving. These factors include:speaker’s accent, unfamiliar vocabularies, the logic of complex statements, unbalancedenergy distribution and intense emotions, etc. When those problems occur and impactthe consecutive interpretation, interpreter should take timely coping strategies toimprove the interpretation output, such as: positive prediction, Schema Model, speculation based on analysis, appropriate translation methods and many other flexiblestrategies. However, the coping strategies are just an expediency of solving theemergency in interpretation process. The interpreter should have an attitude offlexibility and prudence for using them. Besides, with a clear acknowledgement of thelistening and information receiving barriers, interpreters can train themselves withclear goals, thus to minimize listening and information receiving problems in theprocess of interpretation and to improve interpretation performance to a large extent.
