Fluency is one of the two basic standards of measuring interpreting quality. Atpresent, the scholars at home and abroad mainly focus on studies on second languageoral fluency, pragmatic fluency in interpreting and disfluency phenomena ininterpretation, relatively few of them concentrate on the study on fluency inconsecutive interpreting. The interpreting task selects a passage about the introduction to energy industryin China from “Field Interpreting” written by Lin Chaolu. The participants of theinvestigation are ten senior students of Chinese EFL learners whose oral achievementsare in the top-ranking of their classes. They all mastered the basic interpreting skillsbecause of passing the exam of knowledge base in professional interpreting. At thesame time, the subjects are deficient in interpreting practical experience, althoughthey are particularly interested in interpreting learning, for this reason, the participantshave active study attitude towards this discipline. The investigation selectedparticipants whose oral achievements are in the top-ranking in order to distinguishsecond language oral fluency from fluency in interpretation. This is an effective wayto exclude the influences caused by uneven oral proficiency from factors affectingfluency in Chinese to English consecutive interpreting in such a manner. For the purpose of understanding thought processes or thinking targets of thesubjects at that instant while interpreting, the investigation will give these participantsa chance to listen to the respective output they recorded after the end of interpretingpractice, by this means, it is relative not difficult for the subjects to find out problemsthey encountered during the process of interpreting, to identify the causes of problems,as well as to communicate their ideas and needs. The findings will be morewell-founded on the basis of adopting reflection in time to make the subjects toexpress their thought processes and decision-making processes during consecutiveinterpreting. This thesis expanded a detailed analysis on the samples and stimulated recall fedback by the ten senior students of Chinese EFL learners, the study shows that, the main concentration of factors affecting fluency in Chinese to English (hereinafter asC-E) consecutive interpreting of Chinese EFL learners is as follow: note-taking, stagefright, short-term memory and numerical information processing problems. Thisthesis is given a number of insights and ideas by references and the author. However, the most suitable is the best. A great deal of practice is an essential part of success. The author attempts to come up with the coping strategies aimed at factors affectingfluency in consecutive interpreting (hereinafter as CI) with the hope of decreasingdisfluencies in the process of interpreting, so as to be conductive to improvinginterpreting qualities. This research has profound guiding significant for promotingqualities of interpreting teaching, improving interpreting qualities of Chinese EFLlearners, as well as developing high-level oral interpreters.
