Interpreters always find themselves in extreme difficulty when interpreting longEnglish sentences. It is fair to say that simultaneous interpreting of long Englishsentences is a difficult point that an interpreter always encounter. In order to completethe simultaneous interpreting, the interpreters often adopt one strategy which is calledthe syntactic linearity. Since principle of deconstruction is the basis of syntacticlinearity, how to segment the long sentences into smaller, more manageable sensegroups becomes the key to a success of simultaneous interpreting. The emphasis of thisthesis is on the analysis of the application of segmenting long sentences reasonably inthe English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting in the case of Obama’s speech in FuDanUniversity,2009. Four types of sentences which frequently appear in the speech arediscussed. They are complex sentences (Attributive clause, It phrasing, Passivesentences) as well as the long simple sentences. The writer hopes that readers will get amore profound understanding towards the technique of segmenting long sentences insimultaneous interpreting according to principle of deconstruction so that the readerswill consciously develop their ability and achieve a better performance in future practiceof simultaneous interpreting.
