The comparative study between expert and novice oral interpreters is one of the important research areas of simultaneous interpreting.Studies on the different performances of expert interpreters and novice ones in simultaneous interpreting help novices realize their weak points and are of great significance for interpreting researches. This study observes the interference of long sentences with interpreters' performance in simultaneous English to Chinese interpreting from a comparative perspective. The thesis first reviews comparative studies of expert and novice oral interpreters,an Effort Model of simultaneous interpreting,language-specific differences between Chinese and English,as well as coping tactics in simultaneous interpreting. Then it describes an experiment designed to observe the performance differences in simultaneous interpreting between an expert interpreter and novice interpreters.Besides, this thesis analyzes reasons behind the expert s superior performance, and discusses the coping tactics adopted by the expert in dealing with language-specific problems, especially those caused by long sentences. Finally,it makes suggestions on teaching interpreting and the development of interpreter training programs which will help novices acquire expertise in this field. The study reveals that complex syntactic structure interferes with interpreters'performance in simultaneous interpreting from English to Chinese.Problems arising from cognitive saturation or deficit of processing capacity can be associated with long sentences in English. The difference in interpreting performance between the expert and novices widens in their processing of long sentences from English into Chinese. The appropriate use of coping tactics including segmentation, the delay of response, anticipation, generalization, paraphrasing, addition, repetition and conversion can effectively prevent and deal with language-specific problems especially those caused by the long sentences.
