Coping Tactics For Long Sentences In E-C Simultaneous Interpreting

This practice report discusses coping tactics for long sentences in E-C simultaneous interpreting.It is a report on an interpreting practice by the author during her internship at the United Nations Office at Geneva.It is based on the interpretation on the 31 st session of the UN Human Rights Council under the topic of torture and other cruel,inhuman or degrading treatment and the sale of children,child prostitution and child pornography;special report on the right to privacy and special report on the freedom of religion.The most difficult part in this interpreting practice is the interpretation of long sentences.Long sentences in this interpreting task refer to sentences with subordinate clauses and preposition phrases.By analyzing her own performance and comparing her performance with the UN interpreters’ performance,the author concludes that long sentences in E-C simultaneous interpreting could be coped with tactics such as segmentation,repetition and addition under the principle of syntactic linearity.It is hoped that this practice report will be conducive to improving the author’s future simultaneous interpreting performance and will shed some light on future training and teaching in simultaneous interpreting.
