The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was a transatlantic military andpolitical alliance that western countries set it up under the lead of the United Statesduring the early period of the Cold War, and it has been the main institutional linkbetween North America and Europe for almost sixty years. During the period of theCold War, America took advantage of NATO to contain the Soviet Union and toprevent the threat of Communism. Meanwhile, America also controlled its WesternEuropean allies through NATO. After more than forty years’ confrontation, theeventual breakup of the Soviet Union proclaimed the Cold War’s end, but NATO,which is supposed to collapse, continued to survive surprisingly and graduallyadapted to the Post-cold-war’s international environment and maintained to functionas a link between North America and Europe by adjusting its strategic conceptionconstantly. However, in the changeable international political situation context, relationship between America and European allies aroused differences and showedtheir contradictory side in the course of each adjustment of NATO’s strategicconception. Therefore, the thesis analyses the transformation of the relationshipbetween North America and Europe from the evolution of NATO’s strategicconception perspective during the post-Cold War period, and looks forward to thefuture of NATO.
