As an French enlightenment thinker, Rousseau is one of the mostoutstanding representatives of the great thinkers in18century, who is called“the father of modern democracy”. Marx was the founder of scientificsocialism. Although they were born in different historical times and havedifferent equal ideas, they were very concerned about equality which isconsidered to follow in the future.This paper is divided into three parts to describe concept of equality ofRousseau and Marx:The first part of the paper mainly discusses the historical background、theprimary coverage and the main characteristics of Rousseau’s equality theoryon the basis of two works:《A DISCOURSE ONINEQUALITY》and《THE SOCIAL CONTRACT》.The second part of the paper mainly summarizes the main characteristicsof Marx’s equality theory after combing its development process throughcriticizing capitalism and trying to build the united body of free people fromthe viewpoint of historic materialismThe third part discusses the relationships between Marx’s and Rousseau’sequality: inheritance and transcendence. Marx’s views of equality based onscientific world outlook and methodology. Both of their thoughts aboutequality have a far-reaching influence,Rousseau’s equality became theimportant theory of The French revolution in1789,and the Marx views onequality have becoming the target of the international communist movement,their ideas are the ever-burning lamps of guiding social advancement.
