Urbanization is the inevitable outcome of the economic development, but also the only way towards realization of social development and modernization. Urbanization construction is the important way to solve the problems of agriculture, countryside and farmers, is the only way to narrow the differences between city and countryside, and is the strategic decision of the whole advancement of modernization process in China. Meanwhile, the transformation of farmers’role is a significant issue during the process of urbanization construction, for the core of urbanization is "human’s urbanization" and the process of urbanization is essentially the process of rural population turning into urban population and is the process of role change from farmer to citizen, which plays an important part in the process of urbanization construction. It can be said that the transformation of farmers’role is the essential content of urbanization, is the only way to realize the urbanization and is also the important feature of urbanization. The transformation is a modernistic process, so for migrant farmers, it is a learning process of re-socialization which demands farmers in the following ways: forming open and rational ideas; having the cultural quality synchronizing with education level of cities; setting up civicawareness adopting urban civilization; turning into a modern way ofproduction and living; possessing the city characteristics integratedwith modern urban civilization. As for the present situation of farmers’ role transformation in theurbanization process, on the one hand, we should see the basicadvantages of role transformation from farmers to citizens, such asthe rapid development of urban and rural economy, the strategy ofurbanization development, the optimization of industrial structure, the improvement of farmers’ quality, and so on. On the other hand, weshould realize the problems existing in farmers’ role transformation inthe process, such as the need of farmers’ culture quality improvement, the relative lag of farmers’ ideas, the low level of farmers’ vocationalskills, poor employment environment, and so on. All these problemsdo not arise in one day, but they results from farmers’ conservativeideas, the backward rural education condition, infrastructure andhousehold registration system, and the lagged social organizationfunction, etc.In order to break these constrains and achieve the farmers’ roletransformation, farmers need to change from the single or multipleroles in the past to multiple roles of modernity:1. Strengthening therural elementary eduction and vocational education and promotingthe labor transformation from pure physical type to physical andmental type; updating farmers’ ideas, making the traits of agriculturalsociety turn into that of city and realizing the transformation offarmers’ culture role.2. Cultivating farmers’ modern consciousnessto actively participate in market competition, and making their role change from passivity to positivity, which would lead totransformation of farmers’ economic role.3. Improving farmers’political consciousness and making farmers transform from thetraditional governed to modern governors, which would realize thetransformation of farmers’ political role.4. Arousing the enthusiasmof farmers’ urbanization construction and letting them change fromthe passive participants to positive builders, then realizing thetransformation of farmers’ society role.
