With the advent of knowledge economy era, knowledge become more and more important in the promotion of economic, this means educational attainment is more and more important, so to study the change of spatial distribution pattern of China’s educational attainment have great significance to the field of balanced regional development and human resources planning. Based on the data from the second to sixth census data, this paper traces the change of spatial distribution pattern of China’s educational attainment using average schooling years as comprehensive indicator and education composition and illiteracy rate as supplementary indicators, and explores the causes of spatial distribution pattern of educational attainment from two angles of the population endogenous variables and exogenous variables.Firstly, we study the changes of educational attainment in the whole country by indicators as illiteracy rate, education composition and average schooling years, and we found that the illiteracy rate has dropped significantly, high school and university educated population rate has continued to rise, average schooling years has improved greatly.Secondly, we analyze the spatial pattern of educational attainment in china from three geo-spatial levels of region, provincial, and city, and we found that, during the during the study period, China’s educational attainment has remained the East, West regional distribution pattern; the distribution of the province has maintained the pattern of the northeast, southwest and high level of education remained the "T" shaped pattern, but with the difference of the province gradually reduced,"T" shaped pattern has gradually disappeared in the provincial distribution after2000; specified to the geospatial of city domain, we can clearly see that in year2000and2010, China’s high level of education presented the "T" shaped distribution making Beijing-Guangzhou line region the "axis" of the high level of education. Finally, the paper analyzes the causes of the spatial pattern of China’s educational attainment. On the basis of theoretical thinking, we verify the various factors using the obtained data, and we can confirm that age birth rate, population distribution, population movement, altitude, the development of rail transport, the level of economic development, industrial structure, development of education are certainly connected with regional educational attainment.
