Population pressure is an important aspect in the study on regional resources and environmental security as well as sustainable economic and social development. Wuhan City Circle is the strategically important area of the rise of central China and the comprehensive experimental reform area of building the "resource-saving and environment-friendly "society. Thus, theory and practice on how to realize the harmonious development of population, population, resources, environment, economy and society can act as an example and reference for the whole country. Wuhan City Circle is facing with many population issues, such as the high growth rate of population, aging problems and the imbalance of the sex ratio of population, which have brought a great pressure on building a resource-saving and environment-friendly society. Overall, the study on population pressure has important practical significance.Based on the study of existing theories and researches on population pressure, this paper selected19indicators and worked out the weight of every index with the method of Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP),then built a population pressure evaluation model, calculating the population pressure of each city in Wuhan City Circle and the contributory values of natural factors, economic factors and social factors to the population pressure. Based on the classification evaluation of population pressure, the spatial characteristics of the different levels of pressure zone were analyzed; In addition, the combination types of population pressure were classified and a triangle was constructed on the basis of contributory values of natural resource, economic factors and social factors, displaying the population pressure types and principal contradictions of each city. Finally, through the analysis of the combination types of population pressure and spatial distribution characteristics, this paper proposed the measures to relieve the population pressure of Wuhan City Circle. The main conclusions are as follows:Population pressure of Wuhan City Circle was divided into three levels by using the grading method of jenks natural breaking point in ARCGIS, It is found that four cities in Wuhan City Circle were in the two-level pressure zone in2005and2010, nearly half of the whole City Circle, which indicates that most cities have moderate population pressure. Population pressure of Wuhan City Circle showed an overall increasing trend from2005to2010. The number of Cities in the one-level zone reduced by one and that in the three-level zone added by one. Among the nine cities, population pressure of five cities increased, Huangshi, E’zhou, Xiaogan, Qianjiang and Tianmen respectively, among which Qianjiang was the most prominent. While the population pressure of four cities decreased, that were Wuhan, Xiantao, Huanggang and Xianning and Xianning was the most outstanding. The combination types of population pressure in Wuhan City Circle changed significantly from2005to2010. In2010, the three types of triangles, anterior triangle (the contributory value of social factors was the highest) centre triangle (the contributory value of economic factors was the highest) and after triangle (the contributory value of natural factors was the highest) were complete. However, there was no anterior triangle in2005.From the number of triangles in each combination type, it is found that there were two after triangle (both of them were B-type) in2010,which was one less than2005that had three after triangles(a B-type, two A-type); five centre triangles (a A-type, four B-type) and six (three A-type and three B-type) in2010and2005respectively; and two anterior triangles (B-type) in2010.Indicating that the contribution of economic factors on population pressure reduced from2005to2010, but the contribution of social factors showed an increasing trend in Wuhan city circle.The spatial distribution characteristics of the population pressure in Wuhan City Circle were as follows:one-level distributed in the central and the west region of the city circle, Wuhan and Xiantao respectively; two-level distributed in the south and southeast, That was, Xianning,Huangshi, E’zhou; three-level distributed in the northwest and northeast, Xiaogan,Huanggang respectively; The differences between2005and2010were that Qianjiang changed from one-level to two-level and Tianmen from two-level to three-level. The spatial distribution characteristics of the combination types of population pressure in2010were as follows:after triangle distributed in the central region of the city circle, Wuhan and E’zhou respectively; anterior triangle distributed in the south and the west of the city circle, respectively Xianning and Qianjiang; centre triangle distributed in the east(southeast-Huangshi, northeast-Huanggang),west(Tianmen and Xiantao),northwest(Xiaogan). The contributory value of natural factors was greatest in the central region, therefore these cities should pay much attention to the protection of resources and the environment; social factors contributed greatest in the south, and these cities should pay attention to the reform of social issues and make full use of the advantageous local resources to vigorously develop the economy; and the contributory value of economic factors was highest in the east, west and northwest, which means that these cities should vigorously develop the economy to improve the economic level.The concludes of population pressure from this paper are largely in line with the actual situation of Wuhan City Circle, what’s more, the research on the combination types of population pressure is conducive to analyze the cities distinctively, which has important research significance.
