Population is the most active factor to the regional development. Regional economic development is always accompanied by changes in population spatial structure, which reflect the distribution of the various elements within the region. This paper takes the population spatial structure as the research object, and analyzes the status of demographic characteristics in Wuhan, then sets up mathematical model of the population spatial structure. This article verifies whether Wuhan has formed a multi-center structure, according to the development goals raised in Wuhan Urban Master that enabling Wuhan form multi-core and multi-axis spatial structure. This thesis aims to provide some reference of economic and social development by analyzing the temporal evolution and motive of the population spatial structure.Urban geographers can usually interpret the various structural features of the urban space through the population data. Urban population distribution always is a very common problem in urban geography. This paper describes the population spatial distribution in Wuhan by analyzing three aspects including population size, agglomeration and population gravity center. In the past three decades the population size in Wuhan City continues to expand, but the growth rate slowed down gradually. There is a significant positive spatial autocorrelation property showed in population of Wuhan by analyzing Spatial autocorrelation.Western scholars study the urban population in addition to investigating the distribution of the urban population, but also the relevant indicators to reflect socio-economic characteristics, the spatial structure of urban areas and urban growth etc. Based on the demographic data from1982to2010, this paper studies population spatial structure evolution from the following aspects:first, the changes in number of Wuhan population were analyzed from three levels including circle, zoning and street. Second, population spatial structure evolution was be described and summarized by calculating imbalance index, concentration index, population density gradients and drawing Lorenz curve of population distribution.Based on the summary to the evolution of population spatial distribution, this paper fits population density model for Wuhan with applying GIS software and learning the methods to the geography space problems. In order to achieve spatialization for the demographic data, this paper selects to use buffer analysis which equidistant circular cuts the Wuhan underlay and calculates the plaque area and population density. Take into account the great gap of population density between central area and suburban besides a large area of Wuhan, this article fits the population density functions from two ranges including the whole Wuhan area and the central area. After calculation, the different types of population density function are obtained. According to the principle of maximum correlation coefficient, Newling model is selected for its best interpretation to Wuhan spatial distribution of population. It’s obviously that single-center structure is fitter to explain Wuhan population distribution for its parameters is higher than others. And if the multi-center structure is growing in Wuhan city, this paper demonstrates it under four assumptions and tries to fit multi-center population density model to Wuhan.
