“Holistic teaching approach in a Thematic Unit” is a new trend for ShanghaiOxford English teaching in elementary schools in recent years. It is based on thethematic unit and the knowledge migration by the holistic arrangements of theteaching materials. Language knowledge structures of the unit might be moremeaningful after the rearrangement in certain“Thematic Units”. Therefore,“Holisticteaching approach in Thematic Units” is a more comprehensive scientific teachingsystem which sets the unit in accordance with the characteristics of the studentscognitive development level. The language points and the contents of each unit aredemonstrated by the discourse.In the early1970s, practical exploration based onHolistic teaching approach”theory,was conducted. Goodman,American“WholeLanguage Master”included the“Holistic approach”in language teaching. Andresearchers are paying more attention in domestic China’s English teaching. In thisresearch, the writer has summarized the own practical experience in“Holisticteaching approach in Thematic Unit”,which could make up for the limitations ondomestic research and might be beneficial to more teachers. Also ideas andstrategies to solve the existing problems will be provided in Shanghai Oxford EnglishTeaching for elementary schools.
