Thubten Gyatso, the13th Dalai Lama, played a unique role in the modern history of Tibet. He experienced a lot of ups and downs in his whole life. And in parallel with his life cycle was the unrest domestic situation. All of these made him very different from the formers in the Dalai Lama System. Throughout his life, he was a far-sighted politician. He was not only lead the Tibetan people to fight against the British invasion but also express his sincere desire to improve relationships between Tibet and the central government for many times. Especially in his later years, this desire was far more strong. Ultimately, with his efforts, British political ambitions on Tibet came to naught. For some reasons, the13th Dalai Lama was away from Tibet twice. He saw and heard more advanced system than Tibet, contacted the thought of the Qing Dynasty reformist and other national bourgeoisie activities personally, moreover, he felt India’s development. At the same time, he was moved by Yintang Zhang’s new ideas so that he strongly felt that it was essential to reform to make Tibet develop. As a result, he sprouted out and carried out the Reforms thought reform in Tibet. These thought were a series of Reforms measures in politics, military, economics, health and many other aspects. When it came to education reform, the13th Dalai Lama felt deeply that the reason why Tibet was far behind other areas was the lack of modern education background talent. So he decided to send students to study in the United Kingdom. It is said" Study abroad is an important way to spread human civilization. Without this part, it is difficult to strike the nation to the world." As an inalienable part of the China, it also participated in the "learn from the West to self-reliance" in Tibet in the modern history. Therefore, when I study the history of sending students to study abroad in modern history of Tibet, I try to put this history into the history of sending students to study abroad in Chinese modern history. The thesis mainly discussed the situation of the13th Dalai Lama sent four students studying in the U.K. and after that returned home to contribute Tibet. Although there are many research on the Reforms of the13th Dalai Lama, and all of them are mentioned sending students to study abroad. There is no doubt there are great academic value in these studies. However, there has been no specific research on studying the situation of the13th Dalai Lama sending students abroad from now on. Thus, even though I still do not have enough knowledge to deal with this issue very well, I would like to try my best to do something. In order to finish this thesis, I used Tibetan, Chinese and English information as well as interviews of many scholars and insiders. Besides I analyzed and gave out my own point. It was worth mentioning that many information in my thesis was shown for the first time. This article was divided into four chapters to discuss. It introduced the background of the13th Dalai Lama sending students to study in the U.K. in the first chapter. It mainly discussed the domestic situation and the reason why the13th Dalai Lama sent students to study abroad. The second chapter was about the selection of four students who would be sent to the U.K.. This part was mainly talked about how the13th Dalai Lama selected four students under that background and why preferred Lung-shar to be the superintendent to send the four students to study in the U.K..It was introduced the specific time of the four students left for the U.K. and the study situation of them in the U.K. in the third chapter. The main content was about their study life in the U.K. as well as their interests, and the concrete time of their returning to Tibet. The last chapter was about the situation after they back to Tibet. Including although with the discourage of the13th Dalai Lama, the four youth still faced various obstacles and exclusion, and some of them even failed in using what he had learned to contribute his hometown. However, in any case, sending the four students study abroad was the beginning of the modern history of Tibet on studying abroad. The four brought in the new ideological and cultural development for the closed Tibet. Meanwhile, it was worthy of recognition that their contribution to their hometown.
