With the implementation of higher school fees policy and the advent of the era of mass higher education, the number of impoverished students in colleges and universities has been increasing. Their mental health problems have also caused the extensive concern of school and society from all walks of life. With the influence of economy, society and ethical values changing, the college students’ mental health education and development in our country is still in its initial stage. First, the impoverished students belong to a relatively vulnerable group in colleges and universities. They are easy to produce mental problems such as anxiety, depression and interpersonal, which requests social support. Their economic difficulties in daily life influences the pursuing and achieving of higher levels of physiological needs in getting security, love and belonging and self-actualization.Second, there have been deficiencies in the existing impoverished college students’ mental health service system, which calls for new subjects to be involved. The traditional college students’ work and mental health education as two main intervention paths are lack of professional talent, effective methods, sufficient time and active services. Overcoming the "path dependence" and introducing new subjects are in need.Third, the school social work intervention in mental health problems of impoverished college students is feasible and necessary. Along with the development of social work in domestic universities, the subject has been relatively solid and has accumulated rich practical experience, which lays a good foundation for the future development.Based on the research and practice, this paper proposes to make use of the community work, case work and group work methods, build a professional exchange platform and combine with the college ideological and political education work to implement the goal of school social work intervention in a progressive approach.
