English reading is playing a decisive role in English learning since it is the main way to attain information for most Chinese middle school students. However, the efficiency of English learning and teaching, particularly in English reading, is not satisfying. The main cause of the problem of inefficient learning is due to the inefficient teaching in class where the teachers act as the master of the reading classes, while the students are treated as containers who just sit back and passively react to the teacher, which not only weaken their motivation for learning English but also strangle their confidence and creativities. The situation calls for the reform in teaching methods. Learning plan-guided Teaching Pattern is put forward and put into the practice in the condition in order to find a possible solution to the inefficient teaching and learning. The new teaching pattern is based on the theory of constructivism which emphasizes the main body role of students in the process of learning. By using the learning plan, the students are given more opportunities to deeply think about the questions independently, discuss with fellow students and try to solve problems by themselves in class, which enable them to learn the knowledge, master the learning strategies and develop the good learning habits. Is this teaching pattern helpful in English reading for the Middle School students in our school? In order to find the answer, the author did a whole-term research on teaching reading using t Leaning Plan-guided Teaching Pattern, by means of questionnaires, conversations and experiments and so on. When teaching reading, the students are supposed to learn by themselves in advance according to the learning plan. Then students are arranged to study together in group to finish some reading tasks by discussing with group members in class. Afterwards, students are given more challenging tasks to consolidate what they have learnt. Over a term’s teaching, we can see the use of Learning Plan-guided Teaching Pattern can cultivate the students’reading ability effectively and help them develop good reading habits and reading strategies.
