With many years’investment and construction from the government, the scientific and education strengths of China’s agricultural colleges and universities have been largely enhanced and their infrastructure has been well constructed, which put them at an advantageous position to participate in agriculture, science and education activities. As a concrete way to implement the Strategy of Thriving Agriculture through Science, Technology and Education, the combination of agriculture, science and education is in nature to shift the priority of agricultural and rural economic development to improve rural science and technology as well as local people’s knowledge and skills. In the process of combing agriculture, science and education, agricultural colleges and universities should shoulder up this historical task by putting themselves on the right position to play their part in implementing the Strategy of Developing the Country through Science, Technology and Education as well the Strategy of Thriving Agriculture though Science, Technology and Education. In this way, an increasing number of highly qualified talents will be cultivated to promote innovation in agricultural science and technology and to transform scientific achievements into practices as well, which will further accelerate the development of rural economy and society. As a matter of fact, this is not only a historical mission of agricultural colleges and universities, but also the need for their own development. Some achievements have been made since a number of agricultural colleges and universities participate in the work of combining agriculture, science and education by making full use of their own advantages since1980s. Nevertheless, while facing many problems and difficulties in practice, agricultural colleges and universities play a limited role in serving the development of rural agricultural economy and society. Therefore, it has become an urgent task for agriculture colleges and universities to fully discover and make the most of their advantages, construct an effective mechanism for them to participate in the combination of agriculture, science and education, and to play an active and important role in serving the development of agricultural economy and society.Four parts are included in this paper. The first part introduces the functions and roles of agricultural colleges and universities in the combination of agriculture, science and education. The second part put emphasis on describing agricultural colleges and universities’participation in the combination of agriculture, science and education, summarizing the five main participation patterns and making an analysis of agricultural colleges and universities’participation in the combination of agriculture, science and education by adopting SWOT analysis method. In the third part, cases are used in analysis to summarize the experience of Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University’s participation in the combination of agriculture, science and education, which provides foundation for this study. The last part looks into the mechanism of agricultural college and universities’participation in the combination of agriculture, science and education. Based on the study of the first three parts, the fourth part puts forward that agricultural development could be enhanced and "problems concerning rural communities, farmers and agriculture" could be solved by strengthening the government’s overall planning ability, setting up the guiding mechanism, perfecting the personnel training mechanism, improving agricultural scientific and research innovation mechanism,constructing agricultural sci-tech popularization service mechanism and establishing motivation mechanism of participating in the combination of agriculture, science and education.
