Kunshan Population Growth Since The Reform And Opening Up, Distribution And Migration Studies

Since the reform and opening, Kunshan City has become from a backward agricultural county to the country’s first hundred counties of modern industrial and commercial city. With enormous economical and social transformation, Population growth, distribution and migration in Kunshan City has undergone profound changes; at the same time, these changes can also counterproduct in economical and social development. This paper aims to find out the existing problems by analyzing Kunshan City’s population growth, distribution and migration phenomenon, and put forward the relevant recommendations of population control and optimization in order to achieve sustainable economical and social development.In regard to the research on population growth and distribution, this paper firstly systematically analyzes that the1978-2011population growth process in Kunshan City has been divided into three stages:1978-1989slow growth period,1990-1999less faster growth period and2000-2011faster growth period; Secondly, it studies the2011spatial distribution pattern of the population from the perspective of towns differences and spatial gathering. Results show that the number of population in Kunshan City is higher in the north than in the south; the population of the towns distribution is the core-edge pattern. Population distribution has a certain spatial aggregation, but the degree of concentration is not high. Finally, the research on the influencing factors of population growth and distribution shows that the population growth, distribution are closely related to economic factors.Research on population migration, this paper analyzes the migration phenomena of different kinds of people, the results show that:the process of rural-urban migration of the local population has been divided into three periods:1978-1990slow urbanization,1991-2000accelerated urbanization and2001-2011steady urbanization. Primary industrialization with township enterprises as the main indicator and resistance to common household registration system barriers jointly lead to1978-1990slow urbanization; Advanced industrialized with Zone Construction as the symbol, urban planning and the loose household registration system together cause the accelerated urbanization; while the adjustment of administrative division, the implementation of centralized residence and the integrated construction of social security system collaboratively bring out the steady progress of urbanization, to the depth direction. Foreign population migration process has been divided into1990-1999less faster growth period,2000-2005faster growth period and2006-2011steady growth period. The main mechanism of migration is the pull of fast economical development in Kunshan city, the weakened household registration system disorders and the pushes caused by surplus labors and underdeveloped economic in outmigration areas.Through the above research on population growth, distribution and migration, some problems have been found in Kansan’s population development, so that some relevant population control and optimization recommendations have been promoted, in order to achieve sustainable economical and social development.
