Since the mid1980s, the quality of higher education has been one of the hottestissues in many countries. Many countries began to take actions to assure the quality ofhigher education, no matter developed countries, or developing countries. At present,there are three modes of the assurence of higher education: the mainland model, theUK model and the American model. Compared with other countries’, the qualityassurance system of higher eduction in the United States is old, rather mature andperfect both in theory and practice, and it plays a decisive and irreplaceable role bothin the United States and the development of the higher eduction of the whole world.Institutional accreditation is a unique way of the quality assurance of higher educationin the United States, and it has been proved to be very effective in practice. In the sixregional certification bodies in the United States, North Central College and SchoolAssociation is the largest, oldest association, and it has the most subordinate schools.Its certification standards, authentication mechanisms has become increasingly matureand very representative.Therefore, this thesis starting from the Higher Education Assurance System inthe United States, and uses literature research and comparative research and caseresearch to introduce the history and overview of American Higher EducationAssurance System, including the main body of the certification, the content,membership and funding, certification procedures and the main steps of thecertification results announcement and supervision. Based on the research, the thesistake North Central College and School Association for an example, focuses on thehistorical development of the association, the evolution of the certification standards,and the certification process. And then summarizes the characteristics of the NorthCentral Association, and based on these, the thesis try to make a few comments toimprove our assessment of higher education.Studies have shown that the Higher Education Assurance System in the UnitedStates is an quality assurance mechanisms based on the institution’s self-assessmentand peer review. And it made a great contribution to the development of highereducation in the United States. China is currently in a critical period of highereducation reform and development of higher education, there are more and moreschools and students. And the problems of higher education become increasinglyserious. In order to ensure the quality of higher education in China, we should refer to the practices and successful experiences of Higher Education Assurance System in theUnited States, and further more we should establish a scientific and reasonableevaluation system of higher education as soon as possible to improve our assessmentof higher education.
