In1834, western church sent their first missionary doctor to China, since then MedicalMission began. As the medical activities of the church in China developed, medicaleducation, as a way of mission, started to approach. With missionaries’ effort, the church builta series of medical education schools, which is the beginning of China’s western medicaleducation. Despite that the fundamental goal is mission, and the curriculums and activities ofthe medical colleges of the church had strong religious features, religious medical educationbrought China the advanced modern medical knowledge, medical education system as well asmedical education patterns. Religious medical education was based on elite education. Theyhad systematic and comprehensive curriculums and strict test standards, paid attention toexperiments and practice. Religious educational institutions had trained the first batch ofmodern medical talents. They became the seed of the Chinese modern medicine, leaded thedevelopment of every aspects of Chinese medicine, built the fundamental of Chinese modernmedicine, which contributed a lot. In the20th century, China’s situation changed a lot, newideas were spread everywhere, and both the government and the private came to realize theimportance of medical education, so they built a series of medical colleges. In the meantime,religious medical education couldn’t handle both the missionary and the educational roles,which drove itself into a crisis. Later the Anti-Japanese War broke out, religious medicalcolleges were moved to the western part of China. Their development suffered a setback.After the new China was founded, the government took back the religious medical collegesand changed them into state-owned universities. The history of the religious medicaleducation finally came to an end.This research set religious medical education of modern china as the object of the study,and study its development before the broke out of Anti-Japanese War. This research has fourparts. The first part is the overall description of religious medical education; the second partanalyzes and demonstrates from educational aims, management system, funding source and teaching activities; the third part is case study of Peking Union Medical College, which helpsdescribe the topic more lively; the forth part summarizes the impact of the religious medicaleducation and make us to think deeply. This research describes the religious medicaleducation of modern China in detail, represents its original appearance, and explores itsmeanings and functions.
