Since the reform and opening-up, China has been deeply involved in theprocess of globalization. Today’s China has been a major country both inengineering and the engineering education. However, higher engineering educationmode is still in the exploration. There is a lot of controversy in its mode and goal.Especially there is a serious dislocation between the training to engineering andtechnical personnel and the demand for them to construct for nation. It’s unable toform a good docking between the enterprise recruitment and the employment ofgraduates. So it has become a serious social problem. It has become a seriousproblem that China’s Higher Engineering Education has to face. The problem isabout how to make our country achieve the transform from a big engineeringeducation country to a powerful engineering education nation, and how to make thestudents have the ability of engineering to serve the national economic constructionand innovation strategy. To solve this problem, this article will take the weldingmajor as an example to analysis the tradition of HIT’s engineering education toprovide a real Chinese experience for today’s Chinese Higher EngineeringEducation.This article firstly sort out the development context of the welding major ofHIT, which focuses on putting it into the background of the whole social change ofChina and the historical context of the development of higher education and HIT.Then the article analyzes the influence on the engineering teaching model andtradition of the welding major of HIT that puts practice first, on the basis ofstudying on the specific historical and social context, system and cognitive factors.These factors include the effect of the tradition of focusing on practice from theSoviet union engineering education, the practical request of national importantprojects which is proposed to the engineering students on the basis of nationalcondition of the new China, the rules of teaching practicalness and cultivatingpurpose from the national teaching policy, and MaoZedong’s practical philosophicaleducation and study. At last, the paper makes a further state, that is the formation of the higher education is a contextualized and local practice, its rational standard isdetermined by the context where the education is; engineering education isdetermined by practice-first rather than academy or theory-first, engineeringcapacity should be the standard which values the engineering education.
