Contemporarily, we are experiencing diversified trends for college funding, and raising money in various ways is one of the most efficient way to promote the development of higher education. Therefore alumni donations seem glaringly important for college financing. On a global scale, the modernization of American higher education is at the forefront, so definitely it requires a large amount of capital investment. For a long time, American has accumulated abundant experience of alumni donations. Now, in a new era, the higher education of our country has witnessed a rapid development. A large number of private colleges and universities have been established. However, as a whole, public colleges and universities still occupy rather high percentage. Meanwhile, colleges and universities come across a series of problems such as insufficient funding. It is worthwhile for the public universities and colleges of our country to learn and consider both the ways of increasing the sources of our school funding and the measures of the American counterparts’alumni donation.Alumni donation is a kind of complicated and systematic project. The alumni donation of American public colleges and universities has always been a successful paradigm. They have their unique experience and practice for the ways of donation and donating environment. So this study would rely on the facts of the donations from American public colleges and universities and adopt the research methods of literature study, content analysis and case study in order to systematically and theoretically explore the characteristics, ways and environment of alumni donation for the American public colleges and universities. On this basis, we would elaborate on a case study-The University of Michigan, one of the famous American public universities, investigate its operational status of alumni donation and present deep analysis of its factors. According to the study, the main way of alumni donation for American public colleges and university is alumni foundation. During the donation, it has the attention of leaders, clear objectives, detailed plan, complete organization, transparent spending, market operation and systematic work. The influencing factors for the alumni donation mainly focus on the impact of American society and culture, the support of national policies and rules and the key elements of the school.Recently, with the development of higher education of our country, our public colleges and universities have already begun to pay attention to the utilization of alumni donation and carry out a series of corresponding measures. But we still have a lot of shortcomings. It would mainly reflect on the unsound organization for alumni donation, lack of professionals for funding-raising, insufficient attention of fund-raising, inefficient communication, imperfect system, nonstandard management regulation, simple fund operation and poor multiple operation. Therefore, strengthening alumni donation, cultivating pleasant atmosphere and environment and establishing efficient alumni donating system for our public colleges and universities should be on the agenda. In my opinion, establishing sound alumni association, strengthening the professional organization and teaming building, cultivating healthy alumni culture and harmonious donating environment are the important ways of promoting alumni donation of our public colleges and universities.
