With the progress of our reform on English elementary education,"English Curriculum Standards of Ordinary Senior High School ((experimental draft)" was published in2003. The new curriculum standards center on students and stress human development. And the student-centered approach begins to flourish in many schools nationwide, but some problems and misleadings emerge at the same time.This study aims to discuss the effective teaching in the student-centered approach in senior high schools of China under the background of "English Curriculum Standards" and try to explore effective teaching strategies in student-centered approach that suit our education national conditions. The researcher first elaborates the basic ideology of "English Curriculum Standards" and theoretical foundations of the student-centered approach on the basis of knowing about the background of the "English Curriculum Standards" and the current English teaching condition in senior high schools, and has made a brief introduction of the effective teaching criterion at home and abroad. Then the researcher takes the Senior Grade two students in Xinpu Middle school as the research subjects and adopts questionnaire and classroom observation methods to investigate the practical student-center approach. By collecting and analyzing the data and reasons the researcher manages to explore the key strategies to reach effective teaching, including giving lessons articulately, diverse teaching approaches, making proper allocation of time and tasks, guiding students to devote their attention to learning process and increasing check-up activities. The researcher also has proposed five assistant strategies to promote effective teaching, including making best use of students’ thinking and power, organizing proper teaching structure, applying the art of questioning, using inquiring and teachers’affection. In the end, the researcher reaffirms three suggestions in English teaching, including cultivating students’positive emotion and motivation, rebuilding student-centered evaluation system and stressing vocabulary teaching.
