The curriculum standard for senior high school Chinese has made it clear that senior school students should possess the interest in extensive reading and try to broaden their horizon by reading. It also requires that students should be able to select right reading material independently and read a complete book so as to enrich their life and improve their cultural tastes. Students should also spend their spare time reading literary classics and other reading materials, with a total number of at least1,500,000words.Chinese reading includes in-class reading and outside-class reading. Extracurricular reading is an important part of Chinese reading, which can not only broaden students’ horizon, increase their knowledge, develop their ability to read by themselves, but also have an effect on students’ growth and their view on life and the world. Meanwhile, extracurricular reading also helps students to form life-long reading habits and improve the whole nation’s quality. However, extracurricular reading has not received its deserved attention, or even been stopped by teachers and parents, which greatly affects students’ improvement of comprehensive qualities. This thesis, based on the research on senior high school students’ extracurricular reading in LiuYang, analyzes students’ present situation in extracurricular reading, the reason for the phenomenon caused by students and teachers, finds out where the reason for the problem lies, and comes up with ways and strategies to solve the problem.The thesis is made up of six chapters.The preface and literature review are placed in the first place.The first one focuses on the vital significance that extracurricular reading has on senior high school students. It tells not only the positive effects of extracurricular reading on students’ study, but on their future development.Some theoretical basis like confusing concept and theory, tower-like theory are put forward in Chapter2.In Chapter3, the author points out the reason for students’ present situation of extracurricular reading and attempts to find out the reason for students’ unsatisfying state from schools, teachers, students and parents.In Chapter4, the author has raised some ways and strategies to solve the problem according to the result of questionnaire made among students.Chapter5focuses on the Challenges that Chinese teachers in Liuyang are faced with and solutions adopted by teachers to the problem after analyzing the result of the questionnaire on Chinese teachers’ extracurricular reading.As extracurricular reading is low efficient and disordered, and there is a lack of evaluation system, the author puts forward the evaluation principles and ways in Chapter6.
