The current English teaching gradually lays emphasis on the cultivation of students’comprehensive ability of English listening and speaking, and aims at preparing them for daily communication in English. On the other hand, our teaching needs attaching great importance to the cultivation of cooperative learning ability. In this way, teachers can improve students’ability of lifelong learning and cooperation with the help of cooperative learning.In recent years, scholars abroad and home have done a lot of researches on current situation and problems. The researcher studies carefully the relevant theory, including theory of constructivist learning, and theory of hierarchy of needs by Abraham Maslow, and implements cooperative learning in junior high English listening and speaking classes, exploring specific implementation steps for more effective teaching. With the scientific analysis of the experimental result, the research hypothesis is proved. The teaching method applying cooperative learning is of better feasibility and of more practical value, students’ability of listening and speaking is developed and their consciousness and ability of cooperation are cultivated.In the study, the main research methods include literature review, questionnaire method, interview method and experimentation. First, the researcher searches for and consults relevant materials with the purpose of learning about related researches and teaching practice. Then the author uses questionnaire, interview and test result contrast for the demonstration of the experimental hypothesis.In this study, the subjects are from two intact classes in Junior Three in No.6Middle School, Changsha, Hunan Province.85students, aged from14to15, are involved in this study. The author takes Class310as the experimental class with42students in it while Class312as the control class with43students in it. The author teaches these two classes. Data will be finally collected from the questionnaires and the analysis of the test after experiment, and analyzed both cross-sectionally (between experimental class and control class) and longitudinally (looking for changes over time). The analysis of the research results shows an obvious improvement of students’listening and speaking competence with the help of cooperative learning, a satisfaction of their learning motivation in class and even after class, the development of their cooperative consciousness and ability.This thesis is divided into4chapters. Introduction is mainly about the background and significance of the study, problems of language teaching in junior high schools and the key research questions. Chapter One is the literature review of cooperative learning theory. Chapter Two is the theoretical basis of cooperative learning. Chapter Three is the process of the whole experiment. Chapter Four is the data analysis. And the last part is the conclusion. The research indicates that comparing with the traditional teaching method, cooperative learning in junior high English listening and speaking classes is more helpful for the improvement of students’ability of English listening and speaking. And it can help for switching their learning attitude and developing their English learning motivation and interest. Moreover, it is in favor of cultivating their consciousness and ability of cooperation in learning.This research shows that there are considerable limitations, which are to be improved in the research and practice in future. The researcher will improve her own ability of practice for more efficient and effective teaching method.
