In order to adapt the need of the new times and make English learners master the language flexibly and fully, ordinary high school English curriculum standard states that teachers should pay more attention to students’interest, life experience and cognitive level during the process of class design. So it needs corresponding classroom activities in different types of classes. To put the hand to the study of classroom activities and probe into the development of English classroom potential is a vital way to apply most New Curriculum Reform conception to every student. As is known to all, reading teaching plays an important role in high school English teaching, and the development of reading ability is one of the main objectives. Building up the effective student-centered classroom activities have become an effective means for English teaching.In view of the importance of classroom activities in English reading, it is necessary to understand whether teachers in high school can attach importance to classroom activities and how they implement classroom activities in English reading. To get a real picture about the current situation of English reading classroom activities in senior high school, the writer did some investigations in Xixiang senior high school. Firstly, the writer did two kinds of questionnaires for teachers and students respectively. According to teachers’questionnaires, the author analyzed English reading classroom activities design, the implementation of classroom activities and the evaluation about English reading classroom activities. From students’perspectives, the author investigated the classroom activities forms in English reading in senior high school, the attitudes about them, the function and the factors influencing the classroom activities. Secondly, by some class observations, the writer could understand deeply the current situation of pre-reading activities, while-reading activities and post-reading activities. Lastly, through face-to-face communicative way, the writer further understood the current situation of them and found some problems.The writer designed three research questions:(1)What is the current situation of English reading classroom activities in senior high school?(2)What are major problems in the English reading classroom activities?(3)What possible suggestions can be useful for effective English reading classroom activities? By means of questionnaires, interviews and classroom observations, some problems are revealed.Based on the problems of English reading classroom activities, some suggestions are put forward for teachers. Firstly teachers must consider all kinds of factors to choose the corresponding classroom activities such as students’ number, the requirements of syllabus, students’real English level, students’interest, the features of topic and the effectiveness of classroom activity. In addition, classroom activity is closely related with the teaching objective and students’ daily life, each of which should have the logical relationship. According to the real situation, teachers should use various means to create a real language circumstance as soon as possible. When designing the classroom activity, textbook are the secondary to students. Secondly, teachers should perform all kinds of roles in the classroom activity. When implementing the classroom activity, the reading strategies and reading methods are provided for students, especially each stages of classroom activity. And mistakes students often make are corrected depending on the current condition. Finally, teachers should evaluate timely what students have performed during the classroom activity and also reflect the classroom activity after the implementation of classroom activity.
