English, as one of international languages in the world, is playing a vitally important role in learningadvanced science and technology. It is a passageway to lead people to the world, and English teaching isthe key to the passageway. With the advance of globalization and the development of economy and society,English teaching is set a higher request.In order to adapt the request of society and make the English learners master this language flexibly,newly promulgated Ordinary high school English curriculum standards states that during the process ofclass design, teachers should pay attention to students' learning interest, life experience and cognitive level.So it requires corresponding classroom activities in different types of classes. To put the hand to the studyof classroom activities and probe into the development of English classroom potential is a vital way toapply most New Curriculum Reform conception to every student. Under the principle of the NewCurriculum Reform, the whole optimization of teaching should be explored and classroom activities shouldbe the principal direction.In view of the importance of classroom activities in English teaching, it is necessary to find outwhether teachers in high schools can attach importance to classroom activities and how they implementclassroom activities. In order to get a real picture about the current situation of the implementation ofEnglish classroom activities in senior high schools, the writer did some investigations in practiceschool-Weihui senior high school on this subject. Firstly, the writer did some class observations in order tofind out the kinds of class activities teachers like to carry out and their ways to implement the activities.Secondly, the writer issued questionnaires for the students and teachers to find out their opinions aboutclassroom activities. In addition, the writer did some interviews for the teachers and students. By using theface-to-face communicative way, the writer further realized the teachers and the students' views onimplementing classroom activities and the existing problems.The author designed three questions:1. How is the current situation of implementing English activitiesat senior high schools?2. What do the teachers and students at senior high schools think of the classroomactivities?3. What are the major problems in the implementation of classroom activities in English teaching? By means of classroom transcription and questionnaire as well as interview for the teachers, thedata and some information are collected, the author knew about the current situation of implementation ofclassroom activities and the views of teachers and students. Based on those, the findings of this study areshowed: awkward silence, students' low participation, monotony of classroom activities, and teachers'ignorance of the students' needs. Finally, this paper, based on the findings, comes up with some suggestions:the first one is authorities of educational institutes should encourage teachers to break withexamination-oriented teaching design. The second one is authorities of educational institutes shouldprovide more training for teachers. Teachers should try their best to make the classroom activities effective.
