By comparing the features of age distribution of the CBA and NBAprofessional basketball players of the2009-2010,2010-2011,2011-2012season, wefind that the CBA professional players begin their careers when they are18, while NBAprofessional players begin their careers when they are21, so CBA professional playersbegin their careers earlier than NBA players, but retired much more earlier with CBAprofessional players beginning to retire at29while NBA’s at34. That is, thecompetition age of a Chinese basketball player is shorter than that of outstandingforeign basketball players’. The length of the competition age of athletes immediatelyconcerns realization degree on their individual value. After all, cultivate a good athletetakes not only the high financial and material resources for the athletes themselves, butalso the need to invest too much energy and time. Therefore, athletes’ early retirementproves to be an unseen waste of resources and talent.This paper focuses on analyzing both objective and subjective factors which causethe Chinese basketball athletes’ competition ages shorter, based on the relationshipbetween the competitive level of basketball player and competition age, by searchingand reading some papers and posting questionnaire to basketball players, scholars andcoaches. Among which, objective factors include adolescent improper training,coaching factors, recovery after exercise training, training pattern of talents, playerspacking and professional basketball system and other social factors, racial factors alsoplay a more important role. On the other hand, we will also expound it from thefollowing aspects: professionalism of the athletes, sports motivation, and lifestyle. Pointout these problems, this paper propose a number of suggestions for the improvements,in order to extend the competition age of professional basketball player, and draw someattention to develop more scientific and rational training model, training methods forbasketball players, thereby extending the competition age and their career in the goldenage, postponing the retirement age. At the same time that will help to achieve higherefficient economic value and make rational use of basketball talent resources whilereducing the cost of investment, finally promote the development of China’sprofessional basketball.
