Objective:Obesity is one of the most important risk factors of atherosclerosis and the protecting action should be taken to improve somatometric measurements and prevent atherosclerosis in obese children and adolescents. This study is to observe the effect of weight loss on atherosclerosis risk factors by4-week aerobic exercise and diet in obese children and adolescents.Methods:30obese children and adolescents (15males,15females; aged11to15years) were recruited from weight reduction camps during2011in Shanghai. Cardiovascular disorders in the subjects were excluded and the needs of daily calorie intake of the subjects’were provided with. These obese children and adolescents’ height, mass, fat percentage, fasting blood insulin, AIP, ACAT2, LPL, VEGF and TNF-a were measured both at the beginning and ending of the weight reduction program, which lasted for4weeks.Results:After4-week weight loss by aerobic exercise and diet exercise, the weight, BMI, fat percentage and fast serum insulin of subjects were reduced significantly (p<0.01). The level of lipoprotein lipase and HDL-C/LDL-C increased while the level of TG, TC, HDL-C, LDL-C, AIP, ACAT2, VEGF and TNF-a decreased significantly (p<0.01).Conclusions:4-week weight loss by exercise and diet intervention effectively improved somatometric measurements, lipid metabolism and insulin resistance of obese children and adolescents, to a certain extent, as well as chronic inflammation of vascular, for primary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease beginning in childhood.
