Due to physiological disorders, the self-consciousness of moderate mentally handicapped students is low, resulting in many difficulties in their social adjustment difficulties, and their behaviors often deviate from the human social rules and norms. Therefore, helping children with mental retardation to establish self-consciousness is the starting point for helping them acquire social norms and integrate into the society. How to find an effective teaching strategy for improving the self-consciousness of students with moderate mental retardation is the exploring direction of our efforts in the education of students with moderate mental retardation.I am a teacher for students with students with moderate mental retardation in Shun De Special Education School and have served for improving the self-consciousness of students with moderate mental retardation for5years. What kind of effective teaching strategy should I adopt to achieve my teaching goal, so as to improve the self-consciousness of students with moderate mental retardation and accelerate the pace of their socialization has also been the subject of my study.Self-consciousness is a form of consciousness and it is abstract, it is extremely difficult to materialize, understand and master the abstract consciousness for mentally handicapped students.By referring to the description on the establishment and developmental sequence of children’s self-consciousness from researchers both at home and abroad and their experiments on the self-consciousness development of normal children, and combining the characteristics of students with moderate mental retardation in our school and the common characteristics existing in their self-consciousness development, this paper conducts the following action researches on teaching strategies for establishing and developing the self-consciousness of students with moderate mental retardation. According to the sequence of formation, the self-consciousness level of students with moderate mental retardation can be divided into three parts:"physiological ego---psychological ego---social ego". What kinds of teaching strategies should be adopted to achieve the teaching goal:improving the self-consciousness level of some students with moderate mental retardation is the emphasis in this study. This study tries to adopt the "mirror image" strategy to help students with moderate mental retardation to build the part of "physiological ego" in the self-consciousness; it tries to use "evaluation" strategies to achieve the teaching goal of helping those students build "psychological ego" in the development of self-consciousness; and it also tries to use "group competition" strategy to help those students build "social ego" in the development of self-consciousness. The results of this study proves that the above three teaching strategies are effective for improving the self-consciousness level of students with moderate mental retardation. At the same time, I hope this empirical study will be conducive to the teaching of self-consciousness in the next stage for me. Meanwhile, I hope the above three teaching strategies for improving students with moderate mental retardation will provide references for other scholars who are engaged in the study of the self-consciousness of students with moderate retardation.
