Depression And Its Influencing Factors Of Migrant Children:a Shanghai-Based Questionnaire Survey

The great life changes of young children may impact their psychological state a lot. Estimated based on a report in2012from ACWF and data of the sixth national census in2010, migrant children aged6-14accounted for at least20%of children in Shanghai. There’re so many migrant children that it is necessary to understand their psychological state in a more in-depth and comprehensive way. Many local studies have confirmed that the psychological status of migrant children may be much worse than normal urban children, and may be even worse than normal children in rural areas, which could lead to a number of behavioral problems. When I conducted social work intern and closely contacted with migrant children, I found that they were fragile and easily depressed. So I decided to take depression on behalf of migrant children’s psychological conditions, adopted an ecological system framework and used social capital theory as interpretive theory to discuss the relationship between social capital and depression of migrant children.This study used questionnaires and took students from3to7grades in two migrant children schools in two administrative districts as research objects, to collect data about migrant children social capital and depression conditions.501questionnaires were distributed and returned, the valid number is484. These484questionnaires are samples of the following analysis.After logistic analyses, I found that grade, both parents’working conditions, monthly family income, peer help/aid, belonging of community, parental monitoring are statistically significantly associated with depression. Surprisingly, in this model, school social capital is not significantly correlated with migrant children’s depression. However, in the analysis of subsequent groups of migrant children, school climate shows a significant effect on depression.According to results of data analyses, this study presents recommendations for youth social work. The most important thing to reduce the likelihood of migrant children depression is prevention and to actively increase storage of every dimension of social capital. For those who are already suffering depression, social workers should help them bridge different environments together, improve environments atmosphere in an all-around way. Serious cases should be promptly referred to professional agencies.
