The Chinese,which functions as the carrier of the cultural and historical heritage ofthousands of years, is a subject with broad reality basis. Its purpose has always been todevelope students’ability to use the language; to shape their adequate personality;to direct andhelp them to develop a correct outlook on world,life and values.Thus, we must takeadvantage of the profound culture contained in Chinese subject and the classic passagesconcerning character education in the textbooks and emphasizing the harmonious developmentof knowledge、abilities and man himself, Chinese education should make the cultivation ofstudents’adequate personality its ultimate objective and provide a solid basis for charactereducation.First of all,this paper states that the purpose of character education is to cultivate studentsto be virtuous, knowledgeable, capable and psychologically healthy. And then this paperanalyzes several mistakes existing in the character education: treating morality education ascharacter education, considering character education to be merely psychological healtheducation, and confusing humanism education with character education. After the analysis ofthese mistakes, the paper points out that under the impact of market economy, feudalisticeducational thoughts, and college entrance examination, character education fails to fulfill thegoal of cultivating students’personality. Consequently, many defects are caused tostudents’personality development, such as being self-centered, lacking a sense ofresponsibility, being unable to deal with the interpersonal relationship properly and lacking thecapability to act.Secondly,based on Chinese reading education, the paper not only interprets thecharacter education targets in Chinese reading teaching set by Chinese Curriculum Criteria ofCompulsory Education (2011version), which provides theoretical basis for implementingcharacter education in Chinese reading teaching, but also analyze the problems of charactereducation in Chinese reading education: first,teachers’analysis of passage substitutes thestudents’reading practice;second,collective discussion substitutes personal reading;and third,character education in the reading teaching tends to be excessive and unrealistic. The paperalso, from the perspectives of class hours and textbooks, explains the advantage of Chinesereading in implementing character education. And thirdly, based on the problems analyzedabove, this paper proposes some implementary tactics to character education from theperspectives of teachers, textbooks and methods.The suggestions for the teachers are toimprove their own personality, enrich their knowledge and love the students.As for thetextbooks, the author suggests that teachers should classify the materials and find out thecharacter education contents,and then introduce different reading teaching methods accordingto various passages. The innovation of this paper is that it is closely based on the Criteria andputs forward an autonomic-cooperated-exploratory reading model. There are three teachingcases which the author experienced during the class practice in this paper and they are expectedto be useful for the school teachers of Chinese subject in their cultivating the students’adequatepersonality.
