Second, we discuss teachers' role in enhancing understanding through reading. Third, we pay attention to the related theories of reading and understanding. Fourth, several reading theories (Schema Theory, Automatic Information Processing Theory, Systematic-Functional Linguistics and Constructivism Model) and reading models (top-down model, bottom-up model and interactive model) are introduced. Fifth, a new teaching reading method is suggested for teachers to conduct reading class, which is "Lead in---Read---Practice". "Lead in" is mainly to arouse the students interest in reading and help them to do some preparation for the reading task; "Read" means having the students 40 read the passages by using various kinds of reading skills to understand them easily; "Practice" is the feed-back from reading. Finally, several suggestions about the teachers' professional knowledge, the selection of reading materials and so on are made.It is the author's hope that this paper can have some beneficial effect on the teaching of reading to secondary vocational school students.
