The Study On The Professional Development Of University Presidents In Republic Of China

During the period of one hundred years’ development of higher education of China,National University of the Republic of China occupied the position of playing a decisiverole that it had laid a solid cultural foundation for the development of higher education ofChina. The president of the National University, was the major part of the Universityduring the period of Republic of China, also was the practitioner and the symbol during thedevelopment of modern higher education in China. Study on National UniversityPresidents in Republic of China has become the hotspot in current higher educationresearch. Reviewing the remarkable achievements made during the period of Republic ofChina National University, all mainly due to the president’s farsightedness, professionalismand their personal character. Their deep strategy and courage for development, has playedan important role in higher education of China and also making influence nowadays tosome certain extent. Therefore, study on National university president of the Republic ofChina is adapt to the education requirement of modern times. At present, China’s highereducation in the reform in the teeth of the storm, specialized university is the inevitablerequirement of school educators era.In the short thirty years’ founding of the Republic of China, there was poor socialenvironment and chaos political. However, in such a harsh environment, higher educationof China is difficult with tortuous way which still has made admiring achievements. Allthese were all owned to the national university presidents’ internal quality and actively asinseparable. Referring to the President of the university professional as research dimensionand standard, I do some researches between1912and1949regarding on35nationaluniversities President out of31national universities of the republic of China by collectingyearbook, compilation of archives of the republic of China, university history, biographiesand other information. Analyzed and summarized their individual characteristics,education background, professional background, employment, leadership, etc tocomprehensively display principal qualities, to understand professional development levelfor national university presidents during the period of the Republic of China.Through the research, we find that the National University Presidents of the Republicof China are mostly male with abundant experience in higher education in domestic andabroad, obtaining higher degree, academic background in Arts and law and engineeringbased. The president appointment should be through the government’s administrative procedures which played a dominant role. The president of the National Universitygenerally agreed that University was a place that mainly studied profound knowledge andtrained qualified personnel. Their school running ideas mainly effected by Europe and theUnited States Education idea.
