Under the background of the internationalization of higher education, strengthening school-running characteristics is the key to improve international competitiveness of higher education in China."Chinese Education Reform and Development Compendium" clearly regulates that institutions of higher learning must cultivate characteristics in their respective levels, and "The Level of Job Teaching of Undergraduate Course of Common Colleges and Universities Evaluates Program" also considers "Featured Items" as a crucial index. So the school-running characteristics are the core issue of higher education reform and development in China. Nowadays, the institutions of higher learning are in a state of limited competition, what is more, the convergence is running intensifying, the unity of higher education management system, school leaders and the negative impact of traditional culture are the main factors in influencing the school-running characteristics of institutions of higher learning. Though there are scholars come from domestic and abroad have been carried out lots of researches, and achieved something, these achievements largely concentrated on the concept, the connotation, features, main content, influencing factors and measures of school-running characteristics. These need further confirmation. In my opinion, strengthening the research on school-running characteristics of provincial undergraduate colleges is of great significance to promote the construction of school-running features of our colleges and universities.Literature research, policy document analysis and case study methods were applied in the project. In the first, Based on the analysis of relevant research results at home and abroad, it discussed the building stage and development stage of construction of school-running characteristics, and analyzed the three models of formation and construction of school-running characteristics. They are:spontaneously, core leaders and external forced. Then put forward the inspection standards of school-running characteristics. Then this paper selected four respective Hunan provincial undergraduate course colleges as the research objects to make a survey on the current situation of characteristics of provincial colleges in Hunan from aspects of school-running idea, classification, personnel training mode and campus culture. It investigated the success and the shortage in the process of formation and construction of characteristics. And it concluded the main reasons of the laciness of school-running characteristics from the following aspects, the education management system, school tradition and the school leaders. At last, it put forward the advices to construct the school-running characteristics from four aspects:unique concept of teaching, cultivation of discipline characteristic, innovation of talent training mode, and construction of idiomatical campus culture. Through this research, it could provide certain theoretical and practical basis for the construction of school-running features in colleges and universities in China.
