The computer and network technology has been applied everywhere in today’s life since the beginning of the second decade of the21th century. The Internet has changed our everyday life, especially the ways of interpersonal communications. The interpersonal communications between people are not confined to their region, their relationship or their occupation any more, and make a complicated network. Under the background of the internet age, the ways of university students’communication have been dramatically changed. So, it is very important to research on university students’interpersonal communication through the internet based on the society exchange theory, and this research has high theoretical and practical values. From the viewpoint of social exchange theories, this research combines quantitative and qualitative research methods of the social science. We apply the questionnaire that200tests are collected from students from three universities in the Hunan province (Hunan Normal University, Hunan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Shaoyang College). Base on the analysis results of the collected data, we comprehensively discuss the logical relationship between different aspects of university students’interpersonal communication through the internet. We make two research assumptions:the first is that new features of university students’interpersonal communication through the internet emerge, and the second is that the internet affects the subjects, aims, ways, and contents of the interpersonal communication of university students through the internet. To validate these assumptions, we collect200tests from students of different grades and majors from three different universities. This thesis elaborates the choice of samples, the design of the test and the analysis of the data through the SPSS analysis tool. The independent variable is the internet, and the university students’interpersonal communication is the dependent variable. We validate the assumptions by formatting the variables and then analyzing the collected data. The results are as follows:under the internet era, the university students’interpersonal communication manifests several new features in terms of the subjects, aims, ways, and contents of the communication. So, this research validates these above two assumptions. The internet brings various effects on the university students’ interpersonal communication. Healthy interpersonal communications through the internet is very important for university students. Since these young students are within a special all-by-himself/herself period, healthy interpersonal communications make senses to their physical and mental health and future development, and contribute to their socialization. Whether a university student can effectively contact with other people through the internet is important indicator of his/her physical and mental health. At last, for the disadvantages of the internet on the university students’interpersonal communication, this thesis provides several measures to guide university students to appropriately use the internet to communicate. So they can prepare for their future social life.
