It is believed that intelligence quotient (IQ) is the decisive factor for success for a long time. However, it changes with the times and nowadays it is the emotional quotient (EQ) that plays a more important role in one’s success. An age of3to6(namely, the preschool period) iscrucial to EQ development, and one important way to cultivate EQ is reading. As to preschoolchildren, picture books are more popular. Reading picture books can help children develop anoptimistic and outgoing personality, foster a sense of unity and harmony and nurture a precious compassion. These qualities are essential parts of high EQ for the children to meet the needs of social development. But the current situation of reading children’s picture books is not optimistic. Many people have not realized the significance of picture books for EQ training or known anything about the way in which the picture books promote EQ training.This paper addresses EQ and the connotation and characteristics of picture books as well as the relationship between the two, discusses types of picture books for preschool children and how to select them through research on current situation of emotional characteristics (EQ) of preschool children and reading activities of picture books, and gives reading guidance for picturebooks for preschool children. The writer takes examples of180parents, children and individual teachers in the kindergarten where her own son attends, Jianguo Kindergarten of Shijiazhuang Saintach Kids, and conducts a six-month survey, analysis and effect test by such means assituational setting, naturalistic observation, questionnaires, interviews, experiments and lectures. It comes to conclude that preschool children improve their EQ significantly through reading picture books, thus reading pictures books does help EQ development. Reasons are as follows:Firstly, children are in a happier mood, more initiative to interact with others. The new comerscan calm down more quickly;Secondly, children can maintain self-control for longer time;Thirdly, children have stronger capability to stand setbacks and ask for help initiatively.In conclusion, all these changes and improvements will reflect in the future life of the children.
