Research On Migrant Preschool Children’s Family Education

As the economy develops and the urbanization advances, millions of people have left their hometown to seek for living in other regions of China. As the scale of such migration grows, more and more migrant workers enter the cities by family style, which lead to the growing number of migrant preschool children. Family education has important influence on people’s life. However, the migrant preschool children’s family education has many problems.This research starts with the delineation of the basic family background information of the migrant preschool children. The data is collected from J city in Shandong. The methods of paper questionnaire, interview and observation are adopted to assess the parenting conception, parenting style and the cooperation between the families and kindergartens. We identified several problems and analyze the factor that cause such problems form the perspective of family education capital. Then certain countermeasures are provided to solve the existing problems, which might be of value in improving the condition of the migrant preschool children’s family education.The results show the following problems:(1) the parenting conception of the migrant preschool children’s parents are fallacious.They have unrealistic expectation of their children, which putting the children under invisible pressure; there is disorientation in their parenting conception; and they have erroneous view about children’s games.(2) The interaction between the children and their parents is poor.Fathers show a low level of engagement in the interaction; The content and methods of interaction has certain degree of deviation;(3) The parenting styles are somewhat offset, which includes:the coddling of children; some parenting styles do not fit the natural development of children; there is lack of parent participation in children’s reading or gaming;(4) The cooperation between parents and kindergarten is not ideal, which is demonstrated in:the parents are lack of initiative in participation; the content and forms of participation is relatively superficial. This research digs into the factors that cause the problems, which includes the parent economical capital, social capital and cultural capital. The bad economical capital of the migrant families affects the smooth conduct of family education.The social capital of the migrant families has limited positive function. The intergeneration transmission of the cultural capital of the migrant families influences the quality of family education.Then the countermeasures improving the current situation are proposed from the micro, meso and macro levels.(1) Macro-level--Government should provide support for the family education of migrant preschool children.(2) Meso-level--The kindergarten and family education professionals should provide certain guidance for the migrant parents.(3) micro-level--The parents of migrant children should promote their own family education attainment.
