Talent cultivation has always been the most fundamental social function and historicalmission in universities.With the advent of higher education popularization, someuniversities have taken an attempt to establish a group of special organizations in Chinawhich carried out the experimental reforms of the talent cultivation model and studentmanagement system.Those organizations which inherit the spirits of the traditionalcollege in China and learn from the institutions of the college in England and America hasgradually become an important part of talent cultivation in universities.Moreover,thepractice of those organizations has a far-reaching significance on the development of thetalent cultivation and undergraduate education.This thesis generalizes the connotation of New-college through comparing andanalyzing three modes of college: traditional college, British college and Americancollege.The New-college with a goal of promoting students’ development which inherit thespirits of the traditional college in China and learn from the institutions of the college inEngland and America is a new educational organization.Its value is rooted in the traditionalpersonality education integrating American general education and British liberaleducation.In addition, this thesis summarizes the development achievements of the New-collegethrough its development of processes and motivations.There are three main modesconcluding student affairs management,teaching management and teaching entities in thepractice of New-college which has formed diversified development modes.Furthermore, allof them highlight their educational functions which mainly reflect in strengthening theknowledge base of students,improving the sense of engagement,enriching the lifeexperiences,cultivating a sense of belonging and collective spirit and so on.However,many problems in the development of the New-college mainly concentrated on therequirements:the pursuit of richer value,greater autonomy,more practical effect in theimplementation of tutorial system,more substantial atmosphere of life and so on. Finally,the thesis proposes that the New-college in practice should be improved from thefive aspects:establishing on the basis of the traditional culture and clearing the pursuit ofvalue;straightening out the relationship among the New-college, departments and schooladministration,and implementing the autonomy of the New-college;strengthening theconstruction of tutorial system and building harmonious relationships between teacher andstudent.Besides,the New-college should improve the living atmosphere to reinforcestudents’ sense of belonging and build up a scientific assessment system to promote thehealthy development of the New-college.
