Cheng Tianfang is a controversial person in the republican period. He is worth studying in the aspects of education, diplomacy and culture. After the founding of the country, his evaluation by the academic circle was always based on his political background, his positive contribution was never evaluated objectively. Cheng Tianfang served as the government committee of the Anhui province and a part-time Secretary of Education, the headmaster of the Anhui Normal University, the headmaster of National Zhejiang University, the Secretary of Education in Hubei province, the Academic Dean of Central political institute and the headmaster of the National Sichuan University. All these educational posts showed an indivisible relationship between Cheng Tianfang and the education of the Republic of China. Thank to all these posts, He transformed his practice into cognition, rethought profoundly of the modern Chinese education and brought out a special point of views of the education theory, education system and the education method. The systematic study of Cheng Tian fang’s educational thought is not only good for the objective evaluation of his contribution to the education of the Republic of China and the further study of the essence of his ideological pursuit, but also for the hold of the transformation and development of the education of the Republic of China and the deep recognition of the education of the Republic of China.From the study, Cheng Tianfang’s educational thought is a product of his family background and the era. According to his own qualifications, he took a systematic traditional cultural education and went to America for further study in his youth. At the same time, he gained his own experience in the political movements with the influence of the modern thought in China. All these factors laid a firm foundation for the formation of Cheng Tianfang’s educational thought. The period between1929and1945was the period of the accumulation, formation, perfection and practice of his educational thought. Cheng Tianfang saw that education played a decisive role in people and nation and realized the importance of talents in the process of engaging in teaching. He realized that a cause of the backwardness of China was the backwardness of education, so he summarized his work, made progresses with his summary, tried to transformed his thought into practice and made a contribution to the innovation of the China modern education.Cheng Tianfang made a detailed division to the education system. He divided the education into primary education, secondary education and higher education. There are production of education, national education and occupation education included in primary education and secondary education. On the teaching method, Cheng combined the essence of Chinese traditional culture and western advanced teaching methods. He enriched the approaches. In personnel training, he paid attention to personality and cooperation. He used dialectical materialist point of view, not only to play students own individual student space, but also let them know the group cooperation importance to the physical and mental development. He left an indelible mark to the China modern higher education, Including professional classification, colleges and departments, entrance examination system and student management scheme.His educational thought is a fusion of Chinese traditional culture and the western culture, highlight the characteristics of his time. There should be a place of Cheng Tianfang in the history of China modern education. This paper mainly summarize and analsis Cheng Tianfang’s educational thought from three parts:the first part is the background of Cheng Tianfang’s educational thought; the second part is the main content of Cheng Tianfang’s educational thoughts and practice; the third part is the evaluation of Cheng Tianfang’s educational thought.Through the study of the educational thought of Cheng Tianfang, we will obtain a further acknowledge of Cheng Tianfang and it’s more sensitive to his great historic and realistic significance.
