In the early nineties, with the advances in computer hardware and softwaretechnology, widespread use of the Internet brought a powerful driving force for thedevelopment of computer games. In the21st century, online games have become anew direction of development of computer games. Strong theoretical framework andcutting-edge network technology not only give players an unprecedented gamingexperience, but also put forward higher standards and requirements on an online gameplan. The theory of achievement need starts with the research of players motivation,combining psychology of motivation for the studies of designing games. The way ofthis research will have a profound impact on the game plan and the user experience.The theory of achievement need, also known as “Theory of Three Needs”,proposed by the famous American psychologist David McClelland in a series ofarticles in the1950s. The theory is that to a certain extent, human behavior isinfluenced by three following needs—achievement need, power need and affinityneed. From the view of online game plan, all the players behavior in the virtual worldare dominated by various psychological needs, to meet their needs through the gamemechanics sticking in the game world. Therefore, achievement need, power need andaffinity need as the three main ways to meet the psychological needs of the players,directly impact on the plan and design of the online game mechanics.From the perspective of the game plan, this article analyses psychological needsof the players combining with the theory of achievement need, to sum up severalelements of the impact of the game plan—achievement motivation, rights motivationand parental motivation. Regarding the various mechanisms in the game plan as abreakthrough,it researches how the theory of achievement need impacts on the gameplan, to find the relationship between the theory of achievement need and the gameplan by the analysis of player motivation.This article has a comprehensiveunderstanding of the behavior of game players in the virtual world to design moreattractive and sticky online game for them.
