In order to cultivate outstanding international leading talents in the field of basic disciplines,China began to implement the "Top-notch Plan for cultivating top-notch students in basic disciplines" in 2009.On April 29,2019,at the "Six Excellence,One Top" 2.0 launch conference,it is regarded as a strategic,key and innovative approach to build a "Quality China" of higher education in China.The conference calls for efforts to cultivate the mission responsibility,academic interest and intrinsic motivation of the students selected in the "Top-notch Plan ".As a psychological quality,achievement motivation is an intrinsic drive to motivate individuals to do important or valuable work and to achieve success.The achievement motivation of the top students in the "Top-notch Plan " is a key variable in determining whether the goals set by the program will ultimately be successful,because this variable determines whether the students selected in the "Top-notch Plan " have lasting intrinsic motivation to succeed in their studies and careers.These top students with high achievement motivation,high motivation to learn,higher ambition,and more specific learning goals are more likely to succeed.So,What is the level of achievement motivation of top students in college? What factors influence the achievement motivation of top students? How to effectively regulate and control the achievement motivation of top students? This study attempts to answer these questions through empirical research,which maybe provide reference for "Top-notch Plan " version 2.0 in China.Based on the above background,this paper reviews the literature on achievement motivation and the achievement motivation of top students,Achievement motivation inventory was used to measure the achievement motivation level of 735 top students in the 19 universities of "Top-notch Plan".At the same time,the achievement motivation inventory was given to ordinary college students with the same major the 19 universities of "Top-notch Plan".This paper uses the Cohen's d method ofmeasuring difference to calculate the achievement motivation of top students and ordinary students,and finds that top students have higher level of achievement motivation than ordinary students.The difference scale of the total achievement motivation level between the two groups of students is in the middle to upper level(p<0.001,d=0.43).There was a significant difference in the dimension of curiosity between the two groups(p<0.001,d=0.57).Achievement motivation as an important internal motivation factor to motivate individuals to achieve career success,the total achievement motivation of top-notch students is significantly higher than that of ordinary students,which shows that the "Top-notch Plan" is effective in stimulating top-notch students' achievement motivation.Moreover,the research also found that the achievement motivation level of top students is controlled by "Barrel Law",and top students have strong expectations of success,but there are also problems such as weak psychological endurance,insufficient leadership and insufficient efforts,The goal of top students is to grow into elite scientists and strategic scientists.If there is not enough psychological endurance,or not enough effort,or lack of leadership,even top students with an intellectual base and intellectual abilities that are higher than those of the average person are unlikely to make it as an elite or strategic scientist.Furthermore,the regression analysis on the influencing factors of top students' achievement motivation was carried out that serving as student leader can significantly improve the achievement motivation level of students selected in "Top-notch Plan"(p<0.01),especially the level of personality motivation(p<0.001).The score of achievement motivation of top students as student leaders were significantly higher than that of top students who were not as student leaders(p<0.01,d=0.22).It is obvious that serving as a student leader can improve the core quality of leadership,adaptability and curiosity,especially the level of leadership(p<0.001,d=0.49).Finally,using structural equation modeling,it is found that the psychological endurance,adaptability,independence,challenge,self-confidence,leadership and curiosity have the greatest influence on the achievement motivation of top students.Moreover,it is found that these seven aspects are an interrelated whole.In order to improve the top students' individual motivation to the greatest extent,that needs the joint action of family,society and school education and then to improve the top students' achievement motivation.
