English assignment is an important part of the English teaching in junior high school, which is a key parameter for impacting the teaching quality. The new teaching reformshave been under way for many years, and have accomplished significant achievements inthe junior high school English teaching. However, the reform on English assignment, as animportant component of the new teaching reforms, has been lagging far behind theEnglish class reform. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the current junior highschool English homework, and explore the new techniques of English assignment designand reform. The author conducted a survey on the status quo of English assignmentimplementation in her own class in2009. According to the survey, those students willingto complete the assignments only accounted for25%, while as many as70%studentsregarded assignments as heavy burdens. Besides,5%students could not finish theirassignments, and the students who couldn’t finish their assignments but copied others atweekends took up a higher percentage. Why? The crux was that there were manyproblems in the assignment arranged by the teachers. Firstly, the assignment wasmonotonous and boring. The students were required either to copy words and sentencesmechanically or to learn the text by heart. Secondly, the assignment was lifeless and stuffy, which was detached from the students’ real life, and lacking in varieties and amusement inpractice. Thirdly, the assignment was excessive in quantity. There were no definite drillinggoals for the assignment. How could the students develop their enthusiasm and initiativein face of such assignments?Teaching is an art designing or giving an assignment is also an art. Sometimes, improving the art is more useful than reducing the students’ burden of schoolwork. However, what areas are the individual assignments reflected? How does the individualassignment give the students far-reaching impact? What do teachers have to change inorder to meet the new objectives and requirements to stimulate their professionaldevelopment? The author has got a lot of inspiration by learning from the experts and scholars both at home and abroad since2009. The author did her research from2009-2012,based on the multiple-intelligence theory of the American psychologist Howard and theobjective taxonomy theory of the American educationist Bloom, and guided by the newcurriculum concepts.120students who she was teaching were the research subject, theauthor carried out the individual assignment research by theoretical study, questionnaire, interview, classroom observation and other means of research tools. In this paper, the necessity of the reform of the junior high school English assignmentis put forward firstly. The author summarizes the domestic and foreign research results andthe purpose about the junior high school assignment. She also proposes the designprinciples in terms of teaching practice. She has got many important findings by analyzingthe concrete case; and the collection of data, comparing the academic achievement withthe non experimental classes. It has been found that the individualization of assignmentshould be reflected in the process of assignment design, completion, correction, andevaluation. Scientific and reasonable English assignment can fully excavate students’learning potential and give maximum play to assignments’ effective function of reviewingthe learnt knowledge and cultivating capabilities and characters. At the same time, teachers can also make use of assignments to understand students’ demands, help thembuild up self-confidence, develop active learning attitude and stimulate their learninginterests, which is favorable for students’ character development and improvement ofall-round qualities. So in the usual process of teaching, the teachers should pay lessattention to the grammar and vocabulary teaching, they should pay more attention to theactual language using and develop the students’ comprehensive ability of using thelanguage by experiencing, practicing, partaking, cooperating.
