The English homework is an important part of English teaching in senior high school and it also serves as an effective extension and supplement. Meanwhile, English assignment is a test and feedback of teaching. With the development of new English curriculum reform and the approval of English Curriculum Standards, in the phase of basic education, English teaching aims to foster students’ability of using English synthetically by achieving the five curriculum goals:language knowledge, language skills, emotional attitude, learning strategies and cultural awareness. The scientific and effective English homework is beneficial for students to reinforce language knowledge, upgrade language skills, and foster positive attitude and self-learning ability.Based on rich literature review about English homework at home and abroad and relevant theories including English Curriculum Standards, Multiple Intelligences Theory and Humanistic Theory, this study aimed to explore the present situation of English homework of senior high school and provide reference for English teachers. And therefore three research questions are put forward:(1) What is the present situation of senior high school English homework?(2) What are the teacher’s purposes towards assigning the English homework in senior high school?(3) How students do their English homework in senior high school? This study adopted questionnaire and interview to do the research. The data about the three research questions are collected by the questionnaire to sixty students and the interview to the English teacher.The general research findings are as follows:(1)The content and form, quantity, difficulty, validity, consideration about individual difference and purposes of English homework meet most students need.(2)When designing English homework, the English teacher considers the teaching materials, the students’ learning level, students’ preference towards written homework and oral homework and the cultivation of students’ learning abilities and methods.(3)The completion of English homework varies from written English homework and oral English homework. In addition, resident students and non-residents are slightly different from each other.
