A Study On The Problems Of English Homework Assignment In Senior High Schools

As the extending part of in-class teaching, English homework should never beneglected. However, through long-time observation on its assignment in senior highschools, the author finds that the significant role of English homework has beenoverlooked to some extent by most English teachers. As a result, some problemsemerge in English homework assignment. And many positive effects of Englishhomework have not been activated in the process of English teaching and learning.The author launches a study in grade one of a normal senior high school, whichincludes sample analysis covering46samples of the assigned English homework,questionnaire of the whole1028students in grade one, and interview interviewed22English teachers. The study means to discuss the problems existing in senior highschool English homework assignment in terms of its amount, types, and students’attitudes to it.Through the study, it is found that there are serious problems of both amount andtypes in English homework assignment. The amount of current English homework islarge most of the time, so that lots of students cannot submit their English homeworkon time, and they treat it as a learning burden. The types are unchanged and alwaysthe exercises in all kinds of exercise books or papers. Students do multiple-choice,reading, cloze, etc. repeatedly. Because of the problems the author finds out or may betogether with other reasons, most students cannot tell their attitudes to Englishhomework assignment clearly. They stay in a dilemma and feel puzzled, but have topersist in doing what teachers ask them to do. Most of the positive effects of Englishhomework have not been recognized by students.
