As the saying goes,“reading makes a full man; practicing, a competent man”.Combination of theory and practice has become the basic guiding ideology of modernnational education to cultivate talents. To cultivate the graduate student’s practical ability,communication ability and confidence by teaching assistants has become a common practicein developed countries. Discussion and analysis of the implementation of the “Americangraduate teaching assistantship” mode which combined with the characteristics of China’shigher education to development the graduate education system of Chinese, which contributeto further improve the quality of graduate students in china.Teaching assistants’ cultivation in American is competed by graduate school. There arespecialized agencies responsible for the selection, assignment, training, payment, supervisionand evaluation of teaching assistants. With support from schools, colleges, teachers andstudents the graduate teaching assistantship to obtain the very good result. In addition to thepractice of the campus, the Council of Graduate School and the Association of Americancolleges and Universities jointly sponsored PFF (Preparing Future Faculty), the plan calls fora postgraduate qualification university to cooperate with other types of schools, in order toimprove the practical ability of graduate students to provide a variety of ways.This dissertation systematically analyzes the formation, operation and characteristics ofthe Duke university’s graduate assistantship of implementation mode, aims to explore the ruleof the model in the process of implementation, mining the deep-seated reasons for its success,and combined with the actual situation of our country, for the successful implementation ofgraduate teaching assistant system in China to provide some suggestions.This thesis consists of the introduction and four other parts. The introduction mainlydiscussed the problems, current situation and the innovations. Chapter one analyzed thedeep-causes of the forming of “graduate teaching assistant” from two aspects of historical andrealistic causes; Chapter two introduces the operation of specific rules, training content,supervision and evaluation system of the teaching assistantship of Duke university; Chapterthree introduces the characteristics of the Duke university’s graduate teaching assistant system. Chapter four by discussing and analyzing the successful experience of American’sgraduate teaching assistant system, combined with the actual situation of our country, putforward enlightenments for better implementation of graduate teaching assistant system inChina.
