Before the year1981, the main form of higher education in our nation was full-time general university education. At that time, the talents were needed for the reform and openness, and people’s need of enhancing self knowledge and skill was growing day by day, but the capacity of national economy was too limited during that time, the resources of general higher education were also limited.In such condition, we should find a new way for higher education. Seeing from Chinese culture and historical traditions, various successful self-study cases offer good historical bases for the higher education self-study examination. And at abroad, the popularization of higher education in developed country has developed rapidly. Since1981, self-study examination has been built with quick development, and social assistance begins to occur along with self-study examination.Having undergone nearly thirty years of development, self-study examination of higher education has become one of important education forms of higher education in China, playing a crucial role in improving the number of school-age teenagers to receive higher education and accelerating the popularization of higher education in China. Social assistance constitutes an important part in self-study examination of higher education and serves as a bond linking self-study with national exams. As a result, making research on the learning process of self-taught students receiving social assistance will benefit the development of self-study examination of higher education and contribute to reform and improvement made for the future development of social assistance in colleges and universities.In this paper, based on an investigation and research on the development situation of social assistance in self-study examination of higher education in Guangxi Province, problems existing in social assistance in self-study examination of higher education in Guangxi Province are identified. Analyses are made of reasons why these problems are caused. Moreover, countermeasures and suggestions for management of social assistance in self-study examination of higher education are proposed from five perspectives including establishing correct school-running thoughts for social assistance, finding new school-running methods based on social demands, improving standards for teacher employment for social assistance, perfecting the social assistance management system and paying great attention to self-study students. This paper consists of four parts:The first part is introduction which mainly describes the background information and meaning of this paper, and then summarizes the research status for continuing education in domestic and overseas, and presents the research method and the definition of relevant concepts.The second part makes an questionnaire survey and interview to social assistance in self-study examination of Higher Education in Guangxi province from five aspects which are the basic situation of social assistance in colleges and universities management situation for the teaching of social assistance in colleges and universities, management situation for the life of social assistance in colleges and universities, entertainment activities of social assistance in colleges and universities, and the management situation for examination of social assistance in colleges and universities, and then makes an analysis for the survey results by using Excel2000and SPSS18.0.Based on the actual investigation and analysis, the third part proposes the problems exist in social assistance in self-study examination of Higher Education in Guangxi province. There are four main problems:social assistance in colleges and universities is a for-profit activity and the educational ideology is not correct; students "battle" appears because of student source problems; they assist for examination not for studying; the level of assisted teachers is uneven, the quality of teaching is worrying. Then it discusses the reasons for such existing problems, this paper mainly shows four reasons:feckless regulators; the school does not deal with the relationship between social benefits and economic benefits correctly; self-study students are in difficult position of "education returns"; lacking of employment standard and incentive mechanism for assisted teachers.The fourth part based on the above analysis and discussion put forwards corresponding strategies and suggestions for the development of social assistance in self-study examination of Higher Education in Guangxi province from five aspects: educational ideology, school-running solutions, employment standard of assisted teachers, school management system and employment of self-study graduates.
