Analysis On The Impact Of Herders’Behavior On Grassland Degradation

As one of China five major pastoral areas, Qinghai Province is rich in grassland resources, and grassland degradation is serious. In order to restore the degraded grassland, improve grassland quality, our government has been pursuing the grazing ban policy and other grassland treatment works. However, due to huge investment, pastoralists decline in revenue and other reasons; the effects of grazing ban are not very well. Moreover, as the microscopic principal of the grassland protection and construction, the herdsman is the key elements to protect the grassland environment. Therefore, the herdsman grazing prohibition behavior, grazing rest behavior and rotational grazing behavior influencing factors and their effects on grassland degradation are very important to improve the quality of the grassland environment. Otherwise overgrazing has been generally considered to be one of the main reasons of grassland degradation. Analysis herdsman livestock behavior influencing factors and the influence on grassland degradation are also very necessary.Based on the above background, we selected four counties, around Qinghai Lake in Qinghai Province as the research area, in order to research herdsman livestock behavior and grazing prohibition behavior, grazing rest behavior, rotational grazing behavior, we select the herdsman characteristics, grassland characteristics, policies, institution, market information, and existing investment as five factors, and use multiple linear models and Logist model to analysis. And using the herdsman two behavior predictive value with other variables, we analysis the causes of grassland degradation. Finally, according to the analysis results we have some relevant policy recommendations.The paper is divided into six chapters. Chapter one is Introduction section, which sets out proposes research questions, clarifies the research objectives and content of the article, And describes the technology roadmap,the innovation and deficiency of research; Chapter two is literature review, include grassland degradation discrimination, grassland degradation causes and herdsman behavior influencing factors; Chapter three is research design which accounts for the theoretical framework, as well as the economic model that the paper uses; Chapter four begins with a brief introduction to research the region and sample selection, then there are descriptive statistics about the herdsman sample distribution and grassland degradation distribution, also use ANOVA to analysis the effects of herdsman behaviors to grassland degradation, the results find that the grazing ban bahvior and rodent have significant effects on grassland degradation, but the rearing livestock behavior do not; do correlation analysis between the herdsman production behaviors and livestock find there is strong positive relationship; Chapter five selects the total household population and government investment as instrumental variables, using multivariate linear models and Logist model to analyze the herdsman rearing livestock behaviors and grazing ban behavior, then do the research about how the two behaviors influence the grassland degradation by multivariate linear model analysis. The results showed that the herdsman livestock behavior and grassland degradation is inverted U-shaped relationship, grazing ban behavior and grassland degradation is negatively correlated; The last chapter puts forward some relevant recommendations, include:(1) control the population, enhance the herdsmans’education level, increase the off farm employment opportunities;(2) proper control the herdsman contract summer grassland, establish the public mangment system;(3) Strengthen the propaganda of grazing ban, and in order to ensure the running, the government should increase the subsidies as the physical form;(4) stable livestock market prices, to increase the livestock selling channels, and gradually establish and improve the livestock products market, and increase the slaughter rate and commodity rates;(5) attention to the collective organization of rodent contorl.
