Daxing District, located in the south of Beijing, is the capital’s largest vegetable producing area,which is known as the South Garden of the Capital. With the implementation of the southern Beijingaction plan and the construction of the capital’s new airport, the vegetable production development inDaxing District is facing new opportunities, as well as many challenges such as the dramatically reducedland area and the decline in the quality of the labor force.Drawing on the experience of agricultural development in the suburbs of big cities at home andabroad, utilizing the correlation theories knowledge of modern agriculture and using comparativeanalysis, questionnaire survey, factor analysis and other research methods, this study carries out theresearch from the basic conditions, history and current situations, influencing factors and the law of theprice of modern agriculture. Based upon the analysis, problems existing in the development of vegetableindustry in Daxing District are clearly defined such as the serious shortage of land and water resources,the significant aging trend of the labor force and the poor product market competition. Thus the overalldevelopment idea has been raised which is aiming at high-end, high efficiency, safety and versatility,emphasizing on the development of high-priced stage suitable for the needs of Beijing citizens,anddeveloping ecological agriculture to meet the public demand for leisure picking, as well as investingmore funds in technical training, infrastructure construction and market circulation.The study initially solved the problems including function positioning, development andgovernment policy support of vegetable production in Daxing District of Beijing., and it has a strongreference to the development of vegetable industry in other suburbs of big cities.
