During the recent years, Shanxi province has made significant achievements in terms of foreign trade and economic developments. However, when comparing with the foreign trade developed provinces, there is still a large gap. The growth of gross domestic product in Shanxi province is heavily reliant on the energy industry, such as coal and coke. On one side, the situation leads to an imbalance in industrial structure in Shanxi province; on the other side, it conflicts with the constraints of global carbon emissions. So it is urgent to solve the existing environmental pollution problems and to upgrade the current energy-demand industrial structure in Shanxi province.Experience shows that development of foreign trade has become the engine of the economic growth all across the world, and it also plays an important role in industrial structure adjustment. Tianjin, as an important port city, is located in countrywide front row in the foreign trade scale. Also it has found out an effective way to upgrade its industrial structure and enhance economic growth relying on the commodity structure and developing modes of foreign trade. The structures of tertiary industries of Tianjin and Shanxi, which dominate by heavy industry, present some similar characteristics. Economic globalization requires that the industrial structures of all the countries and regions all over the world should be linked with the one of the global market, which will lead to a sustainable development in economy.As a new comprehensive reform area, Shanxi Province should catch this good opportunity to learn the successful experiences of developing foreign trade and adjusting industrial structures in Tianjin for references, promote industrial structure adjustment through foreign trade channels, and try to realize the transition and rapid development of economy in a relatively short period of time. Therefore, studying the way for Shanxi industrial structure adjustment from the perspective of foreign trade is with realistic significance.
